Hello! I am happy to write some comments of my life in Weihai as a foreigner.
I have been in Weihai for more than a year now, and my most pleasant memories of the past year are all about the very good people I have met while living and working here.
These people not only include my workmates, but the general population of Weihai. I have much fun every day, meeting and talking across the language barrier, with the taxi drivers, #6 bus drivers, the store clerks, the workers on the street, the construction people, the massage therapists and the people in the little shops that I visit. I must say that some of these people have left very positive impressions on me that will last forever, and they have become very good friends.
Of these people, the most outstanding are the folks that care for me like I am a family member. They provide all the love and attention that I would get from my family in my home country of Canada. I think they represent the heart of China, and it is a very healthy and beautiful heart! I am very privileged to be with them every day.
Of course, Weihai is a beautiful city, with the ocean and the parks, but the environment is only a small part of what keeps me here, and keeps me happy to manage the difficulties of being a foreigner. There are always problems with making myself understood, but many people take the time to try to understand my very poor Chinese language skills, my gestures and my funny drawings. I have fun every week, telling my stories to my friends in Canada by using the internet.
I have traveled a little in this big country. I am lucky to have worked and lived in Jinan and Taiyuan, and visited Qingdao, Penglai, Dalian, Xi’an and Weifang. I am looking forward to having the chance to see more of the scenery of China, and meet more of the interesting and kind people here.
Thank you for taking the time to read my short story.
